Calling all Years 5 - 6 Come and hear these two brilliant talks at Shrewsbury School and join in Charles Darwin’s 216th birthday fun!
This is FREE Event for Years 5 - 6
Talk 1: Why Are Big Animals Rare? Dr Matthews-Bird will take you on a geological murder mystery investigation!
This question has puzzled ecologists for over 100 years. Look around the world and we find precious few large animals. North America has moose and bears, Europe has deer, Australia has kangaroos, but their numbers are small by comparison to the herds that roam Africa. The world is scattered with the fossilised remains of huge animals such as mammoths, mastodons, woolly rhinoceros, glyptodon, and sabre-toothed tigers.
Why did all these large animals die out? More intriguingly, why did their ancestors survive in Africa but nowhere else? In this talk Dr Matthews-Bird will take you on a geological murder mystery investigation.
A talk by Dr Frazer Matthews-Bird Head of Geography, scientist, researcher, climatologist
Talk 2: The Voyage of the Beagle: How an unexceptional schoolboy became one of the world’s most famous scientists.
Come and help to generate the energy to power the time machine that will bring Darwin to the stage - not the wise old sage, but the tough young adventurer.
Find out what the Voyage of the Beagle might have been like and why it matters.
Introduce yourself to the idea of evolution by joining with others in an unbroken line of decent back to the common ancestors share with chimpanzees. Finally, especially for anyone who finds life at school challenging, find out what personal characteristics Darwin had that made him great and realise that you can develop these superpowers too!
A talk by Dr Richard Case - Biology Teacher, explorer, photographer, outdoor adventurer
*Tickets can be reserved - free of charge - via Ticket Source
