Charles Darwin worshipped at the Unitarian Church on High Street with his mother Susannah, daughter of the famous Josiah Wedgwood.
His first formal schooling was with the Shrewsbury Unitarian minister Rev George Case. However, following the death of his mother in 1817, Charles moved to Shrewsbury School at the age of eight years.
The Unitarian Church was founded in 1662 and is a Grade II listed building.
There are commemorative plaques inside and outside the church. One plaque outlines the liberal outlook of the Unitarian movement which is thought to have helped Darwin develop his open and enquiring mind.
Admission: The church welcomes visitors. FREE entry and guided tours.
